The next Dragon Age has been under wraps for some time now, as BioWare works behind the scenes in order to polish up the fantasy roleplaying adventure. The game was first announced at The Game Awards in 2018, and concept art was revealed at Gamescom 2020. BioWare showed off some more content at The Game Awards on Thursday, giving us a glimpse at what the developer is simply calling “The Next Dragon Age.”
“The world of Dragon Age needs a new hero – someone who can take on the evil forces threatening Thedas,” the trailer’s description reads. “Get a first look at some of the new locations you’ll discover and the factions fighting by your side in the next chapter of Dragon Age.”
The trailer doesn’t show many solid details, but we see familiar enemies like the Darkspawn, as well as a few shots of allied characters standing against rising darkness. Solas himself shows up at the end of the game, which suggests he’ll be the game’s main antagonist.
The Dragon Age franchise began in 2009 with Dragon Age: Origins, with Dragon Age 2 following in 2011. Dragon Age: Inquisition came out in 2014, and BioWare has been tight-lipped about the next game in the franchise since. Over the years, developers have shared some fun stories from the development of Inquisition, but few solid details about where the franchise is heading.
It’s been a tumultuous time for BioWare; the studio’s last game, Anthem, struggled immediately after launch, and is still a work in progress. Earlier this month, Mass Effect and Dragon Age leads Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah left the studio. Darrah’s executive director role on Dragon Age 4 will be taken over by studio director Christian Dailey.
It seems like things are revving up slightly for the fourth mainline Dragon Age. For Dragon Age Day on Dec. 4, BioWare released a series of short stories that take place around the world of Thedas, including Grey Wardens, Crows, and elves. It also looks likely that Inquisition antagonist Solas will return, as the expansion was promoted with the tagline “The Dread Wolf Rises,” which serves as his calling card.
