Godfall’s makers offer a long look at PlayStation 5 gameplay

Godfall, the Gearbox Software-published action-adventure for PC and PlayStation 5, got a closer look during Thursday’s State of Play event. Players will be rewarded for being aggressive, taking risks, mastering combat combinations, and dominating the fray, said developer Counterplay Games.

First announced at The Game Awards 2019, Godfall hasn’t shown much since then, except for the leak of some old work-in-progress footage back in January and a slightly longer trailer shown at the PS5 Future of Gaming event last June. In Thursday’s trailer, Godfall game director Keith Lee took players on a tour of the game’s five different weapon classes and the player character’s special abilities, and how they combine to beat ass galore in Godfall.

Lee emphasized that all of the game’s loot and gear is unlocked through gameplay, with no microtransactions of any kind, nor any waiting on new content to be delivered or patched in. “It’s all in the game on day one,” Lee said.

Counterplay is striving to make a game that balances the effect of both gear and player skill, so that users feel like they’ve accomplished something, rather than just prevail on gear score alone. Godfall’s playing style embraces offense over defense, Lee said, and players will frequently find themselves up against multiple enemies.

Godfall does not yet have a release date; it’s due to launch sometime at the end of 2020.
