NBA 2K21 players’ progression in the MyTeam mode will be portable across generations of the same console family — PlayStation 4 to PS5, Xbox One to Series X, and vice-versa — the game’s executive producer confirmed today.
This goes for the entirety of a player’s Virtual Currency (VC) balance, provided they are logging in to the same Xbox Live or PlayStation Network account as they change consoles. “You can even go back and forth playing the current gen version and the next gen version at will,” Visual Concepts’ Erick Boenisch said in a blog post Friday morning, adding that details on the PS5/Series X version will be coming later.
It’s a welcome development for a mode with a heavy emphasis on microtransactions and loot box-like packs of cards. Progression in MyTeam, which is similar to EA Sports’ Ultimate Team cash cow for its FIFA and Madden series, does not carry over to new editions of the game. Players start over every year.
While the standard edition of NBA 2K21 will not include a free upgrade to a newer console, those who get the “Mamba Forever” special edition (which is $99.99) will get a code to download the next-gen version of the game. It also doubles the 100,000 VC players get for buying the deluxe version.
Another all purpose change coming in NBA 2K21 MyTeam will be a shift to a season model of content offerings, similar to games such as Rainbow Six: Siege or Fortnite. Significantly, Boenisch said “there is no paid component to it,” which means that whatever rewards players may be chasing, they can’t be bought under a battle pass-like model. Seasons should last about six weeks, Boenisch said.

Image: Visual Concepts/2K Sports “Some Seasons will add new content for you to play (think something like Spotlight Sims),” Boenisch said, referring to a series of NBA 2K20 challenges that delivered in-game currency rewards and ended with a high-level MyTeam player.
“Other Seasons may add new features to the game, or add a reward twist that you will be chasing all Season,” Boenisch added. “I really want each passing Season to feel fresh. I want the start of a new Season to create a buzz in the MyTeam community that we can all rally behind and be excited about.”
Boenisch used the rest of a lengthy blog post about MyTeam to explain the mode’s features for NBA 2K21, including changes to the MyTeam Unlimited mode, a weekend-only MyTeam Limited series (which features changing rule sets for each event), and an in-world Exchange where players can convert a batch of ordinary MyTeam cards and players for upgrades, some of which are rotating exclusives that can only be picked up there.
NBA 2K21 launches Sept. 4 on Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One. A version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will follow when those consoles launch later this year. A free demo will be available on Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on Aug. 21.
