The next Dragon Age game from BioWare and Electronic Arts will be a single-player-only experience, according to a report from Bloomberg. EA reportedly opted to remove multiplayer components from the role-playing game following tepid response to BioWare’s cooperative shooter Anthem and the better-than-expected sales of Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a single-player game.
According to Bloomberg, the new Dragon Age was being designed with a “heavy multiplayer component” in mind. That feature, or series of features, has since been excised from BioWare’s new project; rather than a live service game in the vein of Destiny or The Division, BioWare will develop a more traditional role-playing game.
Dragon Age: Inquisition, the most recent game in the fantasy RPG franchise, featured a cooperative multiplayer component, but it was distinct from the single-player experience. Two of BioWare’s Mass Effect games also featured multiplayer components, but a forthcoming remaster, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, will not include multiplayer.
Earlier this week, EA and BioWare announced it was scrapping its plans to substantially rework the game Anthem. BioWare had said in early 2020 that it planned to revisit the mechanics of its cooperative shooter, a project called Anthem Next, but in an update posted Wednesday, the developer walked back those plans.
“In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT),” BioWare executive producer Christian Dailey said in a post on the BioWare blog. “We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.”
BioWare is currently working on a new game in the Mass Effect franchise alongside its new Dragon Age. EA offered an early look at Dragon Age 4 in December.
