Where to buy a PS5

The PS5 will be released this holiday season, which means Santa’s likely going to get a lot of requests for a PlayStation 5 under the tree this year. We already know quite a bit about what to expect from the next generation of PlayStation, which will be released on Nov. 12.

A June presentation offered a first glimpse at the polarizing new hardware, which will be available with or without a Blu-ray drive. It will be backward compatible with many PlayStation 4 games and can support 8K resolution and real-time ray tracing. In addition to the new console, Sony is releasing a suite of new accessories including a DualSense controller to replace the PS4’s DualShock 4, a controller charging station, an HD camera, a new headset, and a media remote.

The PS5’s release date and price were revealed in a September presentation, which also brought new details on PS5 launch titles, more upcoming PlayStation games, and a new perk for PlayStation Plus subscribers — a collection of popular PS4 games called the PlayStation Plus Collection that will be available to download on PS5. Sony also confirmed that some PS5 games will cost $69.99, which is $10 more than the current industry standard for video games.

Following the Sept. 16 announcements, Sony revealed that pre-orders for the PS5 would be available “at select retailers” as early as the next day, Sept. 17. Instead, most major retailers — including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and GameStop — jumped the gun. Pre-orders went live just a few hours after Sony’s presentation, and quickly turned chaotic as droves of hopeful gamers tried to get their hands on a new PS5 console.

PS5 pre-orders quickly sold out following the initial frenzy, but we expect retailers to restock between now and launch. Below, we break down everything we know about how, when, and where to pre-order a PS5 console.

When will the PS5 be released?

PlayStation 5 consoles will be available on Nov. 12 in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. The rest of the world will get the PS5 one week later, on Nov. 19.

How much does the PS5 cost?

The standard PlayStation 5 costs $499.99.

For the first time in PlayStation history, Sony is also offering a cheaper model without an optical disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition costs $399.99.

Where can I pre-order the PS5?

Pre-orders for the PS5 went live on Sept. 16, but quickly sold out at most retailers. (As of this writing, Sam’s Club is the only retailer with PS5 in stock, though it’s only carrying the standard edition.) However, thanks to the initial drop we do have landing pages for the PS5, which are listed below. We’ll update this post when more pre-orders are available.

Sony is also offering a limited number of PS5 pre-orders directly from its website. Eligible customers have to be “existing [PlayStation] consumers” and register on PlayStation.com with their PlayStation Online ID for a chance to pre-order. Pre-orders will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and selected customers will be limited to purchasing the following:
