After 18 months of covid-enforced lockdown I’m sure we’re all packing on a few extra unwanted pounds.
So the developers behind the latest Nintendo Switch health game hope they’ve arrived to save the day with a fun-packed sweatathon in Family Trainer.
The aim is to provide players with a full-body workout via fun mini game exercises that require you to run, swing and jump to rack up points and win.
There are also multiple training modes and a two-player option – allowing you to compete or cooperate with a friend or family member.
The game comes with two leg straps that you slot a Joy-Con controller in and tie to your leg.

You then hold the other Nintendo controller and between the two motion gamepads, the game knows exactly how much effort you’re putting in.
There are 15 mini games in Family Trainer.
They range from climbing waterfalls to bouncing on a trampoline.
You’ll also find yourself canoeing downstream, skipping, jumping over logs rolling at you on a race track and a whack-a-mole type game.

Surgeon Simulator 2 review: A wild cartoon medical game ruined by poor game control
They’re all great fun and built to get your heart beating as you pound you legs on the spot, often wildly flailing your arms about with the controller to catch, dodge or attack any given situation.
The graphics have a gentle Japanese anime feel to them and are packed full of colour and vibrancy that sits within the original Wii Fit vibe.
And the menus are simple and fluid, allowing you to jump in and out of the game with ease while taking a breath between exertion sessions.

Gameplay is fine, the motion controls can sometimes be hit-and-miss and fail to track your jumps as planned.
But generally speaking it does what it sets out to do in a very basic form.
Don’t expect incredible layers of detail and endless stats about your fitness level, this is a fun family game and it’s aim is really just to get you off your bum.
You’ll have fun with the family, sweat a little and enjoy yourself.
VERDICT 3/5
