Inertial Drift review: Switch, PS4 and Xbox One fans have a new racer to love

Fast and Furious fans will love this cracking little animated race game.

It’s got lovely cartoony car graphics and is a neon colour explosion on screen, looking particularly stand-out on the Nintendo Switch handheld.

Set in a 90’s retro future, Inertial Drift offers twin stick drifting mechanics that allow race fans the chance to motor along 20 demanding, varied tracks.

It’s fiddly at first, but once you get the knack of driving with your left stick and drifting across lanes with your right it becomes intuitive and a great deal of fun.

The speed feels impressive and you really get a sense of belting around courses with deft accuracy the longer you play.

The 1vs1 element to the game makes it a straight-up battle between two players which seems to add to the adrenaline rush.

There are 16 cars on offer, all with different handling and abilities. There’s more than just aesthetic differences between them, so it gives the game longevity as you try out different race combinations.

The courses too are all very different, from tight neon streets to winding mountain passes and everything in between.

There’s a single player story mode to enjoy but the real fun is in the time-beating leaderboards and online race battles.

This game is a very decent alternative racing title for the Forza fans to try.

And with a lack of titles in general until the new Xbox and Playstation consoles hit shops this winter, it is worth trying out good strong games like this even if they're not accompanied by the blockbuster telly adverts you'd expect from bigger budget hits.

VERDICT 4/5
