Is Warzone Showing Its Zone Boundaries Too Early?

Battle royale games have reached crazy heights over the past few years, and it was only a matter of time one of the big daddies of FPS games, Call of Duty, hopped on the party wagon. And recently, it indeed did, by way of Call of Duty: Warzone, the first ever free-to-play battle royale game in the series, and the first standalone battle royale release, following Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode.

As most battle royale games, you parachute into a map with a continuously shrinking safe-zone, with the simple goal of being the last man standing on the map. COD: Warzone brought some new elements to the table for the genre, such as the in-game currency called Cash, a bigger focus on vehicles, equipable gadgets, and a new respawn mechanic. However, one critcism that can be levelled at Warzone regards the shrinking zone mechanic.

Reddit user u/PillBaxton seems to think so too, which is why he made a post on the official Warzone subreddit, r/CODWarzone, suggesting how it could be improved.

In COD: Warzone, the shrinking area differs from other games in the genre because it’s already shrinking even before the parachuting players have landed. PillBaxton makes the observation that doing the shrinking area in such a way isn’t the best because of how it has a tendency to force players to clump together too much and they’re also pretty much forced to try their best to land as close to the middle of the area as they can. He proceeds to suggest that the shrinking circle shouldn’t appear until after the players land into the map properly.

Despite his post being relatively well-received, with 4.1k upvotes, not everyone in the comment section agrees, with the highest voted comment on the post (that of u/Enganche_10) stating that Warzone is doing well because of the things that it does different, and that not everything should be the same as other battle royale games.

Most people agree with the above-mentioned comment, saying that it helps the pacing of the game and it definitely contributes to Warzone being a more unique BR experience, therefore attracting new players who are looking for something fresh and new in such a game.

Others meanwhile, seemed to agree with the original statement, and that the shrinking circle should be more akin to other notable battle royale games, giving the players more time to strategically plan the way that they’re going to play out the round, and also reduce the potential stress that could happen by having the shrinking area that early on and being forced to clump together with the other players.

Honestly? I’d have to agree with the latter. Having no circle until after landing definitely allows for better strategic planning and a lot more time to scout weapons and vehicles, as well as allowing distance between the players. We do have to social distance, after all, right?

Call of Duty: Warzone is available right now for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
