Armed with more than a few lessons learned from having to adjust due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty League is back for 2021. Today, the league office announced that the regular season will start on Feb. 11 after a special preseason event kicks things off. While the league has said there is more information to come, we have enough now to get started.
Although the Call of Duty League’s 2021 regular season gets underway Feb. 11-14 with the online Atlanta FaZe Home Series, it’ll be the Call of Duty League Kickoff Classic pre-season event that prepares fans for the upcoming season.
To celebrate its first year anniversary, from Jan. 23-24 fans will determine the matches being played in this event via online polling. According to the league, the top three teams in terms of regular-season finish will “hold online polls to determine which team they will face-off against at the Kickoff Classic later this month.”
The league is also giving fans another reason to watch as teams “will participate in a unique snake draft to determine the first groups of the 2021 season.” The new format being presented to fans in the Group Selection Draw Show “will feature a unique format” that will include participating teams. “The unique snake draft format will allow teams to select the team that will be placed in its next-ranked opponent’s group.”
The 2020 Call of Duty League Champions Dallas Empire heading up Group Alpha will select first, which will determine who the 2020 second-place finisher Atlanta FaZe will have in its own group–Group Bravo. Atlanta will then select a team for Dallas’ group.
To get a full explanation on how this draw will happen, the league has put together an explainer video which you can find here.
Last season, the Dallas Empire won the league championship, taking home $1.5M after defeating the Atlanta FaZe 5-1.
