For over a year now, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has hosted countless real world events. Coronavirus related lockdowns may have stopped large gatherings, but graduations, birthdays, weddings, and religious celebrations still need to take place.
Around the world, Muslims are now entering a second Ramadan in lockdown. This celebration sees able-bodied Muslims fasting from sunrise to sunset. However, the meal that breaks the fast, the Iftar, is traditionally eaten communally, either with family or at a Mosque. Of course, to those living alone, this has been lost to COVID-19.
For a month so centered on community, a second year indoors is likely to be difficult for many—but yet again, some are turning to Animal Crossing to mark the occasion.
Over on Reddit, user CrossingBollywood shared an area of an island used for prayers, featuring prayer mats, a fountain, and an impressive structure in the background, created by customizing other pieces of furniture in the game, such as a white pumpkin carriage and two lighthouses.
On Instagram, user kochi.crossing shared a Mosque created in the game, with custom designs lovingly recreating the unique look of the place of worship. In another post, kochi.crossing has also created a changing area for the Mosque, completely adorned with a wide array of blue furniture a custom made carpet.
Last year Animal Crossing: New Horizons made headlines for becoming a popular platform to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. Indie developer Rami Ismail popularized his own celebration, decking his island out with an outside communal eating area and even its own virtual buffet for guest.
With any luck, this will be the last Ramadan and Eid in lockdown, and the Muslim community will be able to safely gather once more. In the meantime, this island-based solution is ensuring Muslims can mark the holiday from their homes and platforming the creativity of the community.
Ramadan started April 13, and will conclude May 12. It takes place for 30 days every year, marking the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.
