Baldur’s Gate 3 "Will Be Very Different At Launch," Larian Studios Said

Baldur’s Gate 3 is still shaping up to become, hopefully, one of the pillars of the CRPG genre in the upcoming years. Larian Studios promised the game “will change considerably” by comparison to the current early access version. Moreover, fans should be ready that the project may not leave the ongoing phase anytime soon.

Larian founder Swen Vincke talked to Destructoid about how the work on Baldur’s Gate 3 is going inside the company. He said he understands that players want to see a full-fledged release as soon as possible, but such a big game takes its time.

The developers are happy with the early access players’ feedback, and they’re using it to identify the main elements that can be refined further. At the same time, the studio decided to drop some things immediately, even though some players asked for them. These include real-time combat with the ability to pause it at any time.

As part of the early access development, Larian is also actively collecting data on what players are doing during their playthrough. For example, developers get statistics about decisions in dialogues. Based on such data, the studio can change the game’s plot if some twists are rarely chosen by the players.

Speaking of the story, Swen Vincke said it will change noticeably, even in the first act, which is available for the players now. Larian is constantly making changes and revisiting story arcs from a different perspective.

The developers fear they may have already released too much content in early access, and that will lead to players losing interest even before the full release. There are already people who have managed to spend 300-400 hours in Baldur’s Gate 3.

As for when the early access period will end, the studio doesn’t know the answer yet. Larian hasn’t finished the content for the second half of the game for now, and the pandemic has clearly affected the timeline.

Previously Larian said Baldur’s Gate 3 will be sticking with early access for at least a year — until the end of 2021. Now the studio isn’t sure whether a full-fledged release will happen this year at all. It’s possible that Baldur’s Gate 3 could be delayed until at least Spring 2022.
