Final Fantasy VII Remake is a pretty easy game. Some of the boss battles can get intense, but the “dungeons” are very linear. That linearity was one of our reviewer’s few gripes with the game, and has invited some comparisons to Final Fantasy XIII. That said, there are still a few environmental puzzles that hide rewards. One in Chapter 6 rewards a Summon Materia that you won’t want to miss.
How To Get Behind The Sector 4 Fan
On the way to the second reactor bombing, Cloud, Tifa, and Barret find themselves traversing maintenance catwalks that hang from Midgar’s Sector 4 plate. Two Materia can be seen as they go, but the player can’t reach them. One is on a far-away platform and another behind a giant blowing fan.
Taking the lift and going up a ladder will lead to a small room with a closed steel door and a terminal. Activate the terminal, and a voice should say something about the fans turning off for temporary maintenance. Then the steel door will open. Cloud and co. are given one minute to defeat whatever enemies are in the room and activate a second terminal. The enemies must be defeated, as Cloud cannot interact with switches when combat is active.
Don’t worry if the timer finishes before you can succeed. The challenge can be attempted as many times as needed. Just go back to the small room and hit the first terminal again. When you finally do kill all enemies in under a minute, you can use the second terminal to open a door right next to it.
This door leads directly to the inside of the fan. You can walk down the tube and find the Summon Materia right in front of the now-inert blades.
What Is The Fan Materia?
Barret speculates that some “kind of badass” will be summoned by the red Materia. In reality, the fan Materia unlocks the Chocobo & Moogle summon. This is the first Summon Materia players can find on their own. This could reference the original Final Fantasy VII, where Choco/Mog is the first Summon Materia Cloud gets. The pair’s signature move is calling a Chocobo stampede.
This is also how players will get the “Cleanup Crew” trophy on PS4.
