GTA 6 is in ‘early development’, Rockstar Games release plans revealed

GTA 6 fans have been delivered a big update about the next Grand Theft Auto game, with Rockstar’s release plans getting outlined.

GTA 6 is one of the biggest mysteries in gaming, with Rockstar Games yet to make an announcement on when the next GTA game will be out.

But while fans wait for official word on the next Grand Theft Auto game they have been given a big update from a reliable source.

Kotaku journalist Jason Schreier revealed more details about GTA 6 in an article posted today about Rockstar Games.

The post details how Rockstar Games has made cultural changes in its company following the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

And it outlines how the development of GTA 6 will be impacted, which Schreier said will be Rockstar’s next big project.

The Kotaku article says GTA 6 is in “early development”, which looks to put to bed those rumours about GTA 6 launching in 2020 as a PS5 day one exclusive.

And it also claims that GTA 6 could be a title that develops considerably over time, with an initial ‘moderate’ release followed by regular update.

Schreier wrote: “One plan that management has laid out for the next game, a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, is to start out with a moderately sized release (which, by Rockstar’s standards, would still be a large game) that is then expanded with regular updates over time, which may help mitigate stress and crunch.

“But there’s a catch: Rockstar’s next big project is still early in development. When production ramps up and the game gets closer to launching, will overtime come with it? Will Rockstar’s employees then face the pressure of months of crunch in order to finish all of the ambitious work it takes to make a Rockstar game?”

Grand Theft Auto fans are currently in the midst of the longest wait ever for a new GTA game, with the last entry in the series releasing over six and a half years ago.

And while the wait for official word on GTA 6 has rumbled on plenty of rumours have emerged about the next GTA game.

It’s been claimed GTA 6 will be set in Vice City, will only be for next-gen consoles and could feature a new location in South America.

One rumour in particular had also claimed that GTA 6 would be a timed PS5 launch exclusive after Sony had paid huge money to secure the rights.

But Schreier’s report looks to put to bed those rumours once and for all, with a 2020 launch for GTA 6 now looking out of the question.

The Kotaku news editor has a enviable track record when it comes to reliability, correctly revealing plenty of big stories before they were officially announced.

Just recently the journalist was the first to report the existence of a Horizon Zero Dawn PC port, and Schreier also broke the news of the Last of Us 2’s first release date delay.

Now that Schreier’s report has revealed that GTA 6 is next for Rockstar, it remains to be seen when the next Grand Theft Auto game could get announced.

Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had previously promised that his firm would be at E3 2020 “in a big way” before the event got cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s unclear whether this tease could have been alluding to a GTA 6 announcement or not.

But Zelnick has been talking up the titles the Rockstar Games parent company has in the works, mentioning before they had the strongest development pipeline in its history.

During a recent earnings call Zelnick spoke about new, inbound “iterations from beloved franchises”.

The Take Two bigwig said: “So as we always do, you’re going to hear our initial outlook for fiscal ’21 in May, and our labels, of course, always make our product releases.

“We have set our strategy, as you correctly pointed out, is to have a strong frontline release schedule, both iterations from beloved franchises.

“We have 11 franchises that have sold in at least 5 million units within one release as well as new intellectual property, and we are working on the most robust pipeline in our history.

“That said, we haven’t always been able to achieve our goal of having a strong frontline release schedule in every year, even in the recent past.”
