New proof that the Xbox Series X is more powerful than the PS5 has emerged via Hitman 3, although the issue isn’t clear cut.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have been out for over two months now and not only is it almost impossible to buy either of them but there’s been very few ways to compare them either.
Multiformat games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Call Of Duty are still fundamentally last gen games and while Hitman 3 is as well, the fact that its lead format is the PC has turned up some interesting differences in terms of how each console runs it.
An analysis by Digital Foundry shows that the Xbox Series X runs at a native 4K resolution but the PlayStation 5 version is restricted to just 1800p.
Not only is the base resolution higher on Xbox Series X but individual shadows are as well, which suggests that Microsoft’s console has more horsepower on hand.
The higher resolution does come at a cost though and the PlayStation 5 version has more consistent performance, with a rock solid 60fps throughout.
By comparison the Xbox Series X sometimes drops below 60fps on the Mendoza mission set in Argentina, although it never gets as low as 30fps (the default on the last gen versions).
Of course, there are a lot of variables at work here, but the results are largely what you’d expect given the Xbox Series X is, on paper, the more powerful.
They’re also fairly minor differences – including the PlayStation 5’s slightly faster loading – and it seems like that the gap in performance between the two consoles will be similar to last generation, even if it’s now different metrics being measured.
