JK Rowling not directly involved with Hogwarts Legacy, still getting royalties

As if aware of the backlash, Warner Bros. has clarified that JK Rowling is not involved with the newly announced Harry Potter game.

Wednesday’s PlayStation 5 showcase saw the rumoured Harry Potter game finally make an appearance, officially titled Hogwarts Legacy.

While the announcement has been received incredibly well by diehard Potter fans, many consider it to be poorly timed due to recent comments about transgender people from series author and creator JK Rowling.

Publisher Warner Bros. itself seems to be aware of the backlash the game is already facing, for simply being associated with Rowling, and has addressed her involvement with the project.

‘JK Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World,’ reads the official FAQ. ‘This is not a new story from JK Rowling.’

This news has resulted in some of the people who oppose Rowling’s views believing that it is morally okay to purchase the game, also citing that buying it will support the developers who have nothing to do with her.

The developers are certainly in a tight spot, having been working hard on this game long before Rowling’s comments were made, with a couple anonymously admitting to being made uncomfortable as a result.

However, it should be noted that even if Rowling hasn’t worked on Hogwarts Legacy, she will undoubtedly earn royalties from the game’s sales.

Others have also rebuked claims that buying it will help the developers, arguing that said developers won’t earn any extra money from sales and the only ones who will ultimately benefit are Rowling and Warner Bros.

While Hogwarts Legacy will likely be a sales success, given the popularity of the brand, it has most definitely been announced at the worst possible time, and reactions from fans shows that Rowling’s new reputation will forever haunt the Harry Potter name unless she has a change of heart.

Hogwarts Legacy will release in 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and PC.
