Monster Hunter Rise & Ori And The Will Of The Wisps revealed in Nintendo Direct

Two new Monster Hunter games, Disgaea 6 and a very tempting looking Ori Collector’s Edition feature in the best Nintendo Direct Mini so far.

Nintendo Direct Minis have been a difficult thing to get excited about in the past, as they never feature any first party Nintendo games and tend to just be low-profile multiformat releases, but not this time.

Capcom announced not one but two new Switch exclusive Monster Hunter games, in the shape of Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin.

Monster Hunter Rise is the closest to a traditional Monster Hunter experience, but it has a focus on verticality and the use of a grappling hook-like ‘Wirebug’ that can also be used in combat.

There’s also the chance to ride a Canyne buddy (a dog, in other words) with the ability to take up to two buddies into battle with you at any time, either Canyne or Felyne (an anthropomorphic cat).

There’s a co-op mode, a number of new monsters – including the fanged wyvern Magnamalo – and some pretty decent looking graphics.

The game will be out on 26 March 2021 and there’s both a pre-order bonus and a deluxe edition with extra DLC.

The other game is a role-playing sequel to 3DS game Monster Hunter Stories, which never got much notice in the West as it came out before Monster Hunter: World made the franchise a hit outside Japan.

There was less information than for Rise, but the cel-shaded visuals looked nice and it’s out summer 2021. Both games will also be featured at the Tokyo Game Show next week.

Disgaea 6: Defiance Of Destiny was also a surprise reveal, with the new main character being a zombie whose super reincarnation power means he gets more powerful every time he dies and comes back, which sounds handy.

The trailer boasted quadrillion times damage, so the game’s sense of humour is obviously intact. It’ll be out summer 2021 on Switch and PlayStation 4.

Other games given a brief go in the spotlight include John Romero’s Empire Of Sin, Sniper Elite 4, NiGHTS spiritual successor Balan Wonderland, and Supergiant Games’ Hades – which will be out today.

That’s not the only game being released today though as formerly Xbox exclusive Ori And The Will Of The Wisps is also available on the eShop right now.

Predecessor Ori And The Blind Forest is already out on Switch so there’s a rather nice looking collector’s edition that includes physical versions of both and a variety of extras. It’s on iam8bit now but be warned: it’s not cheap.
