After a year of free updates for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the upcoming October expansion will be the game’s last major addition. In a new trailer today, Capcom revealed that legendary black dragon Fatalis will be joining Iceborne as the final Elder Dragon for hunters to face. A part of the series since the very first game, he’s a force to be reckoned with and will likely have the best weapons and armor pieces in the game.
The trailer doesn’t reveal a whole lot, but a roadmap on the Monster Hunter Twitter account gives us some extra details on what this update will contain. Fatalis, himself, will be getting added on October 1, 2020, but an anniversary update on September 5 will include some new event quests.
These quests will be focused on Tempered versions of Kushala Daora, Teostra, and Lunastra. If that wasn’t enough, three different festivals will be running for the next few weeks. From August 21 to September 3 is the “Winter Star Fest” and “Holiday Joy Fest.” From September 4 – 17 will be the “Appreciation Fest” and “Grand Appreciation Fest.” Capping off the month (and leading into Fatalis) will be the “Spring Blossom Fest” and “Full Bloom Fest” from September 18 – 30.
Fatalis may be the last major addition, but an Arch-Tempered version of Velkhana will also close off updates to Iceborne. Capcom is giving fans some tough challenges to hold them over until an eventual sequel, which I don’t personally see happening until 2022 at the earliest.
It’s been a wild ride since World originally launched in 2018. Veteran fans were somewhat skeptical of the dramatic changes Capcom had made to the formula, but all of that tinkering paid off in a big way. Both World and Iceborne have sold tremendously well and sit atop the best selling list for Capcom’s catalog. It took a little over a decade, but Monster Hunter has finally broken into the mainstream.
There’s probably not going to be a PS5 and Series X specific version of World, but Capcom would be crazy to not have something lined up for the next generation. Fans still want Monster Hunter and what better way to build anticipation than with a teaser during the Fatalis quest?
