For once the new system update for Nintendo Switch does something useful, with button remapping and the option to transfer data to SD card.
Whenever the PlayStation and Xbox get a firmware update it can often mean major changes and new features, but that’s almost never the case when it comes to Nintendo.
They do release updates, but they’re usually just very minor fixes for problems you never even realised existed. But update 10.0.0 is different, as it adds something fans have been asking after for years: remappable buttons.
You can now map any button on a controller to any other button you like, so if you want to capture a screenshot by pressing the shoulder buttons you can. You can even make the left stick the right stick, and vice versa.
How to remap buttons on Nintendo Switch
The option is in the System Settings menu, under Controllers and Sensors. Once you’re there just select Change Button Mapping and you’ll be able to make whatever changes you want for any currently active controller (so make sure the one you want is turned on, so the Switch detects it).
This works for the Joy-Cons, the Pro Controller, and the Switch Lite. You can even store up to five custom set-ups for each controller, to use with different games or people.
Being able to remap buttons is very important for accessibility and not something Nintendo has traditionally been very good about, so this is a welcome surprise.
Button remapping is not the only new feature though and you can now manually transfer data, including DLC but not saves, between the Switch’s internal memory and an SD card – which will help with freeing up space as previously it all used to happen automatically.
That option is also in System Settings, under Data Management. Just navigate there and you’ll see a new option called Move Data Between Console/microSD Card.
You can see the full list of patch notes below, but other additions include six new profile icons themed around Animal Crossing: New Horizons and a bookmark option for the news app that lets you bookmark up to 300 stories.
How to download Nintendo Switch system update
The update should download automatically but if it doesn’t, or you just want to check, then go to System Settings and scroll down the menu on the left until you reach System.
There you’ll see the option System Update and an indication of the current system version. If it’s not 10.0.0 then just click System Update and it only takes a few seconds to install.
