Oculus Quest 2 Leaks Show Off Facebook's VR Successor

The Oculus Quest 2 VR headset has been leaked thanks to promotional videos that were uploaded to the Facebook Blueprint website. This isn’t the first time that the existence of a new Oculus headset has been rumored to be in development, as leaks for a Quest successor began circulating in July.

While the videos have been taken down since then, they were quickly downloaded and then uploaded to YouTube. According to these videos, the follow-up to 2019’s Oculus Quest will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor that has been specifically designed for VR hardware, 6GB RAM, 3D positional audio, and optional built-in storage capacity of 256GB.

The videos also claim that the Quest 2 has an “almost 4K display,” which is achieved by creating a “nearly 2K per eye” image with 50 percent more pixels than the original Quest. As for the refresh rate, it’s currently unknown if there has been an increase from the 72Hz range that the original Quest is capable of.

In terms of ergonomics, the Quest 2 is described as being “streamlined” and “light,” while the soft-touch head-strap makes use of new materials that make it easier to remove according to the videos. The controllers have also been updated, with new ergonomic designs that Oculus says will make them more comfortable to use over a longer period of time. All Quest games will also work on the Quest 2.

As for the price, a now-deleted Walmart listing had the Quest 2 with 256GB of storage price advertised for $399. The official reveal for the Quest 2 could be made on September 16, when the Facebook Connect developer conference begins. This will be the first headset released by Facebook since it decided that all Oculus users would need to have a Facebook account in order to use the technology, even if they already had a separate Oculus account.

The Oculus Quest can be used as a standalone device for VR gaming or can be connected to a PC, unlike the Oculus Rift which needs to be tethered to a computer to be used.
