Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to Xbox Game Pass, GTA 5 leaving soon

Microsoft has swapped one Rockstar mega hit for another on their Xbox Game Pass service, with the cowboy smash joining in early May.

It’s not even two years old and yet Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is now ‘free’ to download via Xbox Game Pass, or rather it will be from 7 May.

At that point Rockstar’s GTA 5 will no longer be available on Game Pass, after having been added in January – so that might give some indication of how long Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available for.

Few are going to complain at GTA 5’s exit though as not only is it generally pretty cheap nowadays, but you can currently get 20% off it and Shark Cards if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber.

Xbox Game Pass is £7.99 a month on Xbox One or £3.99 a month for PC. Or you can pay £10.99 a month for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and get the service on both formats and an Xbox Live Gold subscription on top.

All of the options give you access to over 100 different games, with the full list available to peruse here. This month’s other new games have included the classic NieR:Automata and the rather good Journey To The Savage Planet.

Games from third party publishers come and go, often only staying on the service for a few months at a time, but all Microsoft exclusives are permanent.

That might not mean much at the moment, given Microsoft’s reduced first party output this generation, but Xbox Game Pass is certain to become a key selling point for the Xbox ecosystem in the next generation – with Sony currently offering nothing that’s anywhere near as good value.
