Secret new PS5 feature lets you create ‘deep link’ to specific parts of a game

The PS5 will allow you to access individual missions and races from your dashboard, without having to open the whole game.

It’s almost August now and the amount of information released about the next gen console is still frustratingly minimal, so it’s no surprise to find out that the PlayStation 5 still has secret features that Sony hasn’t mentioned yet.

They have hinted at the ability to access part of a game directly from the dashboard before but now it’s been revealed that this feature is called Activities, and allows you to play a specific part of a game – such as a mission or race – without starting up the rest of the game.

The feature was revealed in a preview of WRC 9 by Gamereactor, which has now been taken down but which Gematsu was able to take a screen grab of.

WRC 9 is a rally game, so the example used was of specific races that you could create a separate ‘deep link’ to.

This may sound fairly pointless, given one of the major new features of the PlayStation 5 is how fast loading will be on the SSD, but its primary use is likely to be sharing links with friends or even posting them online.

Sony has hinted at such a concept before, with console architect Mark Cerny talking about what sounds like the same feature back in October 2019.

‘Even though it will be fairly fast to boot games, we don’t want the player to have to boot the game, see what’s up, boot the game, see what’s up,’ he told Wired.

‘Multiplayer game servers will provide the console with the set of joinable activities in real-time. Single-player games will provide information like what missions you could do and what rewards you might receive for completing them – and all of those choices will be visible in the UI. As a player you just jump right into whatever you like.’

Sony’s last (and essentially first) PlayStation 5 showcase focused on games, but it’s assumed the next one will talk more about hardware, features, and services – and hopefully the price and release date.

That’s presumably when Activities will be officially announced, although there’s still no date for when it’s going to happen.
