Small World of Warcraft brings Blizzard’s lore to the cult-classic board game

There’s a new take on the classic game Small World, and it’s about recreating the many wars that have happened in World of Warcraft. The board game Small World of Warcraft is set in Azeroth, and two to five players can compete to see who will take over the various zones that make up the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.

Players can take roles like the Blood Elves, the Orcs, the Dwarves, and the Worgen. There are even some fan-favorite races that players can’t choose in the MMORPG, like the Naga and the Ethereals.

Small World was originally released in 2009. It presaged the board game boom, arriving on the scene before Kickstarter became the force that it is today in bringing new tabletop games to life. The civilization-style game from publisher Days of Wonder is well-regarded for both its complex but easy-to-learn systems and its endearing art style. The game has also been ported as a stand-alone product to Steam and to Tabletop Simulator.

The rules are currently available to peruse for interested players; the official site has a PDF in multiple languages available for download. A World of Warcraft board game was released in 2005, but it was originally based around individuals going on adventures in dungeons. Small World of Warcraft focuses more on taking big swaths of territory and controlling empires. For players who felt disappointed by Battle for Azeroth’s Warfronts, this board game might just scratch the perfect itch.

Small World of Warcraft is available for pre-order through the Blizzard Gear Store for $59.99. Orders will ship on Sept. 17.
