Sony Announces Reveal Date For Playstation 5

Playstation 5 information has been scarce. The only concrete information we have about the upcoming next-gen console comes from an interview with Sony’s Mark Cerny at Wired almost a year ago. Now, on the heels of Microsoft’s big Xbox Series X system spec update, Sony has announced they will host a livestream with a detailed explanation of the Playstation 5 tomorrow.

The livestream, announced on the Playstation Twitter account, promises a deep dive on “the system architecture and how it will shape the future of games” with lead systems architect Mark Cerny. The stream is scheduled for 9am PST tomorrow, March 18th.

Sony has some catching up to do with fans who have patiently waited for PS5 info while Microsoft has steadily unrolled the red carpet for the upcoming Xbox Series X. Since the reveal at The Game Awards in December, Microsoft has drip-fed us details about the new Xbox periodically. Just yesterday, Xbox posted the full system specs for the Series X on their website. The new console will be an absolute graphical powerhouse and include some fascinating next-gen features, including an expansion slot for proprietary NVMe memory cards.

Sony, on the other hand, has remained tight-lipped on the Playstation 5 info. While the Mark Cerny interview at Wired did get into some of the nitty-gritty details of the PS5 hardware, we’ve yet to even see what the console will look like. Nor have we seen the new controller (presumably called the DualShock 5) or been shown what’s under the hood. That’s all expected to change during the livestream tomorrow, however. Along with details about the hardware, it’s expected that the PS5 release date will also be revealed.

There’s been some speculation recently that the next generation of consoles will be delayed due to the spread of coronavirus. Industry experts have speculated that the factory shutdowns and mandatory quarantines in China will postpone production of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Recently, production of both Ring Fit Adventure and the special edition Animal Crossing Switch we’re affected by the spread of Covid-19.

We’ll find out all the details tomorrow during Sony’s livestream at 9am PST on the Playstation Blog.
