Sony will update PS5 fans by listening to the fans

The PlayStation 5’s massive fan is already super quiet, but Sony intends to somehow optimise it in the future with online updates.

The PlayStation 5 is already impressing people with its internal fan, which keeps the console cool and is incredibly quiet to boot.

However, according to an interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer, Sony plans to further improve the fan through online updates.

The interview has been translated into English by ResetEra user orzkare, which in turn has been confirmed to be accurate by Eurogamer’s John Linneman.

According to VP of mechanical design Yasuhiro Ootori, who also appeared in the PlayStation 5 teardown video, the console has three sensors which control the fan’s speed based on the internal temperature of the accelerated processing unit (APU) and the highest temperature recorded on the sensors.

Ootori explains that by gathering data on how the fan works for different games, Sony can optimise these parameters via updates.

For example, a game may require a heavy load under a long period of time. To compensate for this, the fan’s speed can be increased to enhance cooling performance and prevent any overheating, at the cost of making more noise.

‘Various games will be released in the future, and data on the APU’s behaviour in each game will be collected. We have a plan to optimise the fan control based on this data,’ says Ootori.

It does seem a bit weird for something that’s not supposed to be an issue to need further optimisation, but hopefully this is just Sony’s way of covering all of its bases.

The PlayStation 5 will release in the UK on November 19.
