Just in case any amateurs were in doubt: no, all of that smoke is not a good sign. Commiserations, Fastaction99.
There are various different types of PC gamers. Some take their rigs super seriously, ensuring that they’re always up to the specs of the most demanding games on the market. To remain on the cutting edge of PC gaming, you can buy the beefiest build you can find for the cash and trust it, or you can go the more technical route and build it yourself.
The latter route, needless to say, can offer up more of a challenge than some might think. Newcomers to this whole “rig-building” thing can quickly find themselves in way over their heads. How many different components are there in the average hefty gaming rig? A whole lot, that’s how many. How important are they all? Very.
In short, you’ve got to really know your stuff if you’re building a PC. This isn’t a casual project to blunder into blindly, as expensive components can turn against you in the blink of an eye. Seemingly insignificant parts, meanwhile, can take you from hosting a casual stream to quickly calling the fire department – which didn’t happen in this instance, thankfully.
Fastaction99 recently hosted a Twitch stream in which he was building his first PC and showing it off live. All seemed to be going smoothly enough; There was no real question about the streamer’s handiwork, until disaster struck: the streamer hurriedly withdrew his hand from the unit, uttered a shocked “oh!” and smoke started billowing from it.

What went so wrong so quickly? Well, according to tech-savvy gamers on Reddit, the issue was with a culprit that pops up quite often in these sorts of cases: the RGB fan header. Aside from that, we’re told, the build was solid.
It’s always super sad when something so small ruins otherwise fine handiwork, and it’s such an easy mistake to make. Don’t be discouraged, Fastaction99. As has been proven so often before, Reddit always has gamers’ backs. Keep your chin up – we’re rooting for you buddy.
