A board game based on the classic 1980s film The Goonies is on the way from developer Prospero Hall, and will be published by Funko Games. Titled The Goonies: Never Say Die, it’s described as a kind of light role-playing experience run by a game master. The game will retail for $34.99 and be available this summer. Pre-orders are available now via Target.
“Embark on a perilous adventure full of dangerous booby traps and treacherous treasure-filled caverns!” Funko Games said in a news release. “One player is the Goondocks Master, controlling fearsome foes, from the outlaw family, the Fratellis, to the legendary pirate, One-Eyed Willie. The other players take on the role of the Goonies — Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Data, and Sloth — overcoming cryptic puzzles and deadly challenges with teamwork, strategy, and Data’s clever contraptions! Will the Goonies discover the legendary riches that will save their homes, or will they follow the fate of Chester Copperpot … and never see the light of day? The Goonies work together to win or lose as a team, while the GM wins or loses individually.”

Early assets show multicolored plastic miniatures of the main characters, a giant octopus, and One-Eyed Willie. The publisher says the final product will include nine adventures and custom dice. It’s being recommended for ages 12 and over, and should make for a fun family game as it accommodates from two to five players.
This isn’t the first time that The Goonies have been applied to a board game license. There have been versions of Monopoly, of course, but also The Goonies: Adventure Card Game. Published by Albino Dragon in 2016, the card game included still frames from the motion picture. This time around, developers have elected for a more comic arts style instead.
