There’s more than meets the eye to World of Warships’ newest update.
The newest update to World of Warships has added Transformers as playable commanders. This new event also features a variety of ship skins and emblems, all featuring or based on classic Autobots and Decepticons.
Until October 5, players have the chance to unlock Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, and Rumble as playable characters. Interestingly, it seems as though these characters are not what some people might expect when hearing that Transformers are coming to a game that revolves entirely around vehicles.
The backstory for this event is that the Autobots and Decepticons found and upgraded old military vessels. The cosmetic commanders sit behind and control the ships’ artillery, there is no actual transforming, and the ships feature traditional weapons.
While it is definitely good that players can’t spend money to unlock laser-based weaponry, some players are confused at the decision to keep the Transformers in their robot forms instead of featuring characters that can switch between boat and robot forms.
Additionally, the original voice actors for both Optimus and Megatron, Peter Cullen and Frank Weller respectively, will not be reprising their roles for this game. The traditional music from the original series will, however, help fans get a hint of nostalgia.
Even though players won’t be able to transform, they will have the option to customize their warships with character-inspired skins, as well as more generic Autobot and Decepticon camouflages.
While the Transformers property certainly makes sense, the in-game event is not really too surprising. World of Warships is receiving consistent updates and just celebrated its five year anniversary. There’s still plenty of time to pick a side, as the Warships in Disguise event lasts until October 5. Until then, players can declare their allegiance to either alliance and unlock a variety of cosmetics by redeeming cyber tokens, a new currency, in the in-game armory.
