Thanks to the disruptive effects of COVID-19, individuals in Hong Kong unable to protest the government in public are taking their grievances online by continuing the protest in the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Hong Kong has joined many other countries in instituting a strict lockdown preventing people form congregating in public places under any circumstances. Given the concern of catching the virus and the violent measures being taken to prevent that spread according to reports of police brutality by Quartz, protestors in Hong Kong have resorted to using Animal Crossing to continue fighting for independence.
While COVID-19 may be disrupting certain aspects of life, video games like Animal Crossing have become a new way for everyone to communicate, come together, and in this case act as a platform for raising awareness of political and social issues around the world.
