Following rumours about the Hitman studio making a dragon game for Xbox, Jeff Grubb adds that there’s a second one that’s more like an MMO.
Earlier this year, Windows Central claimed that IO Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman series, was making an exclusive Xbox game that would feature dragons.
Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but now noted insider Jeff Grubb has weighed in on the claims. Namely, that the original report may have got some information mixed up and there are actually two separate dragon games in development for the Xbox.
While appearing on a podcast hosted by IGN’s Destin Legarie, Grubb stated that, aside from IO’s dragon game, there is a second one that he says is similar to a MMO (World Of Warcraft, Final Fantasy 14, etc.), but he didn’t say which studio is making it.
‘There is another sort of… MMO thing… in the works. And then there’s the IO Interactive thing, and they’re like two separate projects.’
As for IO’s dragon project, Grubb describes it as a ‘behind-the-back, Destiny style kind of thing,’ although he didn’t elaborate beyond that. At the very least, it sounds like a third person game of some kind, but if Grubb’s comparing it to Destiny, it could mean that it will heavily feature online multiplayer and live service elements.
Grubb adds that both projects are still far from release, which is why there’s very little information on either of them. In IO’s case, this makes sense since the studio is likely planning to release its James Bond game first, which has already been formally announced.
It seems a bit odd that Microsoft would want two exclusives that predominately involve dragons but perhaps it’s looking to fill the void left by Scalebound’s cancellation.
As a reminder, Scalebound was to be an Xbox exclusive action role-playing game by PlatinumGames, the studio responsible for Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101. Players would have been assisted by an AI0controlled dragon partner.
In 2017, three years after its 2014 announcement, Microsoft announced that it was ceasing production on the project. Speaking with VGC last year, Platinum head Atsushi Inaba said the studio would love to return to Scalebound someday, but Microsoft owns the rights so it would need Microsoft’s permission (or it could just change the name).
