Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 could make an appearance during an upcoming Zelda Direct to mark the series’ 35th Anniversary. February 21 1986 was the date that the world was first introduced to Link, Zelda, Ganon and Hyrule when the original Legend of Zelda game first launched on the Famicom Disk System in Japan. And there’s reason to hope Nintendo has big plans in store to mark the series upcoming birthday.
Last year the Nintendo Switch makers went all out to celebrate Mario’s 35th birthday.
In the run up to the anniversary of the original Famicom release of Super Mario Bros, Nintendo held a Super Mario 35th Anniversary Direct.
During that broadcast the recently released Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was announced along with an AR Mario Kart game, a Mario themed Game & Watch as well as Super Mario 3D All-Stars.
Considering the Mario 35th Anniversary was such a big deal, it seems likely Nintendo could mark Zelda’s 35th Anniversary in a similar way.
The Zelda 35th Anniversary falls on a Sunday, and while Nintendo has held Directs before on a weekend they usually stick to weekdays for big announcements.
So we could see a Zelda Direct air towards the tail end of next week, or early the following week.
Nintendo announce Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is ‘in development’
In terms of what could get announced, Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is rumoured to be launching this year.
So an update on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch game as well as a release date reveal during the Direct could be a possible top draw announcement.
Elsewhere, recently trademark filings have been spotted for both Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass.
So maybe Nintendo has a Zelda collection akin to the new Mario All Stars on the cards?
Whether Phantom Hourglass and Wind Waker are included on the same collection, or separate ones with one focussing on console re-releases and the other on handheld games remains to be seen.
In the run-up to the Zelda anniversary fans have been taking to Twitter posting their hopes for a Zelda Direct.
One tweeted: “My hopes for Nintendo news going into the next month: February: Zelda Anniversary Direct, possible Pokemon Direct.
“March: Proper Nintendo Direct returns; Smash Challenger Pack 9 announced, Releases close to next wave of amiibo.
“Updates on BotW2 and Metroid Prime 4 also welcome.”
While another posted: “Guys I just find out that Zelda’s 35th Anniversary is coming!!! Hopefully it will be Legend of Zelda Direct”.
And one added: “Hm… Zelda’s 35th anniversary is later this month. Wonder if we’ll get a Zelda Direct to announce some ports/plans for it this month.
“After all, we did get a Mario Direct the month of that series’ 35th anniversary, and Zelda’s like the only other series they’d do that for.”
The last time Nintendo mentioned Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 – which was first revealed during E3 2019 – was back when Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity was announced last September.
During a broadcast revealing the musou-style game the Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said: “Regarding the sequel, in order to make the vast world you enjoyed exploring in the original game even more impressive, the team is working hard on its development, so you’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can provide more updates.”
It’s been a few months since that last update, so hopefully that has given the dev team enough time to prep for the next big reveal on Breath of the Wild 2.
Besides the Zelda series celebrating its 35th anniversary this month, the Pokemon series also celebrates its 25th anniversary.
While there are also rumours still circulating around a possible Switch Pro console that’s in the works.
So February – and 2021 in general – could be quite a big year for Nintendo, and a good time to be a fan of the House of Mario.
