Pokémon Legends Arceus is an open-world adventure in feudal Japan

A new open world Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends Arceus, is coming to Nintendo Switch in early 2022, according to a Pokémon Presents stream on Friday morning.

The gameplay trailer showed a trainer being presented with three starter Pokémon from a variety of regions: Rowlet from Alola, Cyndaquil from Johto, and Oshawott from Unova. The game takes place in the Sinnoh region, and features trainers that do look similar to the trainers you play as in Diamond and Pearl, but with an old-school Japanese twist.

Throwing old Poké Balls at wild Pokémon appears to catch them, without any necessity for battling. You’ll be able to sneak around through bushes and explore a variety of areas in Sinnoh to grab tons of Pokémon. You’ll still need to battle to get through certain parts of the game, however.

Arceus, the god-like Pokémon, also plays a major role in the game, though there wasn’t more information about its role shown during the stream.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the highly anticipated Sinnoh region remakes, were also announced to be released in late 2021 during the stream. Gee, Sinnoh region, how come your creators let you have two new games?
