Razer is taking its commitment to its iconic green color scheme one step further by literally making the brand more “green” and sustainable.
The gaming hardware company announced on Monday a giant roadmap outlining how it plans to lessen its environmental impact over the next 10 years. Razer said that it plans to shift to using 100% renewable energy by 2025, and that by 2030, the company will be entirely carbon neutral and all its products will use recycled or recyclable materials.
“Awareness of how we impact the environment is incredibly important,” Min-Liang Tan, co-founder and CEO of Razer, said in a statement. “Hence, Razer has planned out a sustainability roadmap to continue fighting environmental and climate changes.”
Razer will address sustainability across its company via four main action areas: integrating sustainability plans into the company’s culture, reducing the environmental impact caused by manufacturing, expanding on an existing campaign to protect trees, and creating a new arm to invest in sustainability startups.
Among the commitments, a notable one is the company’s plan to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing. Use of plastics in the production and consumption of video games has been a long-standing barrier in making gaming companies more sustainable. This is especially the case for any company that deals in hardware, like Razer does.
Razer will “ensure that all products will be recyclable with the brand by year 2025,” the company said in a news release. This includes steps like encouraging customers to bring old peripherals to Razer stores for free recycling, as well incorporating more sustainable plastics into its hardware. Razer devices will also “adhere to an eco-friendly design, including FSC-certified, biodegradable packaging.”
The environmental impact of video games has become a much more visible issue in recent years. The problem isn’t just the hardware, but even the energy it takes to play games. At the United Nations Climate Action Summit, 21 gaming companies created an industry-wide initiative to combat climate change called Playing For The Planet, with companies like Sony making bold commitments to “achieve a zero environmental footprint by the year 2050.”
However, whether or not these companies involved in these initiatives follow through and accomplish these plans remains to be seen.
