Not many games carry as high expectations as The Last of Us Part 2. It’s easily one of our most anticipated games of 2020, and we finally have a new release date following the announcement earlier this month that The Last of Us Part 2 had been delayed indefinitely. Once planned to release May 29, The Last of Us Part 2 will now release on June 19 for PS4. Logistical issues and the ability to ensure a simultaneous global launch were reasons for the delay, said developer Naughty Dog in a tweet on April 2. The new June date is possible due to “an ease in the global distribution environment,” according to a PlayStation blog post.
If you had digitally pre-ordered The Last of Us Part 2 before April 2, you should have received an automatic refund–people were notified via email. That means you’ll need to pre-order your copy again to ensure you get the pre-order bonuses and have the game ready to go on June 19.
Naughty Dog is known for its tight set-pieces, incredible character-building, and powerful storytelling, and we can’t wait to see how the developer builds on Ellie’s story. The latest story trailer focused on Ellie and Joel, their regrets, desires, and the violence that has consumed them. It’s a gripping trailer that doesn’t reveal too much outside of the fact that Ellie seems pretty determined, and Joel looks exhausted and filled with sorrow.
In a recent media event, two GameSpot staffers spent a couple of hours playing The Last of Us Part 2–you can check out their impressions and new details learned from the hands-on preview. Plus, catch up on everything we know about The Last of Us Part 2, including its story, setting, combat, and more. One major change: Naughty Dog has confirmed Part 2 will not have multiplayer, focusing instead on the single-player experience. Despite that removed mode, we know that the game will span two Blu-ray discs.

Pre-order The Last of Us Part 2 Ellie Edition
Finally, there’s the Ellie Edition, which has been incredibly popular among The Last of Us fans. Available for $230, the Ellie Edition includes everything that comes with the Collector’s Edition listed above, plus a full-sized, fully functional recreation of Ellie’s backpack. You’ll also receive an embroidered patch and 7″ vinyl record with music from the original soundtrack.
The Ellie Edition sold out quickly when it was first announced, restocked temporarily on February 13, and has since sold out again. This edition is extremely limited, so we’re not sure whether it’ll be restocked again before the game’s release. Some retailers will let you sign up for notifications to let you know when the Ellie Edition gets restocked, so that’s worth doing if you really want to own this edition.
