Nintendo is back on track with the Switch following the lukewarm response to the Wii U, and one of its best supporters is a surprising one: Square Enix has been knocking it out of the park with its games for the system.
Square Enix (formerly known as Squaresoft) used to produce games almost exclusively for Nintendo systems. This changed during the 32-bit/64-bit era, when Square took Final Fantasy VII to the original PlayStation and seemingly cut ties with Nintendo. The two companies have since made up and Square has released plenty of games for Nintendo’s most popular systems, even if it’s clear that it’s saving its big guns for Sony systems.
Square Enix has really shined when it comes to porting its old games to the Switch. The fans of retro RPGs can enjoy games like Dragon Quest I-III, remastered versions of Final Fantasy VII-X/X-2 and XII. The second and third Romancing SaGa games are playable in English for the first time on the Switch, while the incredible The World Ends With You was also brought to the system. One of the best titles that Square Enix has released for the Switch is Collection of Mana, which had the first official English localization of Trials of Mana. The Switch is also getting the new 3D remake of Trails of Mana later this month.
It’s clear that Square Enix is still saving its big titles for PC and PlayStation systems, but it’s obvious that the company is seeing the value in supporting Nintendo’s latest system. The Switch might not be getting a Final Fantasy VII Remake port when its timed-exclusivity period is up, but it’s clear that the relationship between Square and Nintendo is growing strong and the Switch could become the definitive handheld machine for JRPGs in the future.
