Battle royale game The Culling 2 is making a return to Xbox One with a twist.
The Culling 2 originally released in July 2018 and was pulled from storefronts a week later due to a lack of players. The game released into a crowded market during the boom of Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ success, and did not pick up traction.
New players who didn’t own the game prior to its release will have to pay $5.99 to get the game now. After that, players will be able to play one match every day for free. Any matches after that will require tokens, which can be bought for money. Xaviant, the developer, will also add “online match token packs along with passes that give unlimited access for a week or a month.”
All new players will get a one-day free trial for The Culling 2, so they can make a decision on whether or not to spend the money on the game after trying it. Players who win their matches will also get a free match token as a reward, so they can play another game for free.
This business model is concerning, as matches in battle royale games can go one way or another very quickly. Paying money for a game where it could end in seconds seems like an iffy thing to do. It’s also a tough sell, given that most popular games in the genre are, cosmetics and battle passes aside, fully free.
We’ve reached out to Xaviant for additional comment and will update when we get a reply.
Xaviant is no longer selling crates or cosmetics to financially support the game, fully relying on the pay-by-match system. The Culling 2 goes live again on May 14 for Xbox One.
Xbox One X
Microsoft’s 4K-ready Xbox One X is often on sale for much lower than its $499 launch price — Microsoft is currently selling bundles for $399.
