PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya is hopeful that he can finally show Bayonetta 3 this year, as well as provide updates for unannounced games.
Ever since it was first announced at The Game Awards 2017, there has been zero news on Bayonetta 3.
Some fans have become increasingly anxious, seeing the silence as a bad omen, but PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya has stated that he hopes to finally show it off properly later this year.
During a recent Arcade Archives stream (which was handily translated by Nintendo Everything), he said ‘We’ve been working on new stuff like Bayonetta 3, not that I can say too much… but I hope we can give an update during the year’.
The only thing known about Bayonetta 3 so far is that it will release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch, much like how its predecessor, Bayonetta 2, was a Wii U exclusive when it first released (though it was ported to the Switch in 2018).
Even Kamiya’s role on Bayonetta 3 is unknown. He served as the first game’s director and writer but he took a step back for the sequel, acting only as writer and supervisor.
He added that he hopes to ‘give updates on a few more unannounced projects too. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say that, but I said it anyway. The point is – I’m trying to do a lot of stuff this year.’
Last February, PlatinumGames announced a new superhero game titled Project G.G. and said that it was looking into working on a live service game, akin to something like Destiny 2.
As for what else Platinum could be making, one possibility is a sequel to 2019’s Astral Chain. Not only did it outperform sales expectations and is one of the Switch’s best-selling games, but director Takahisa Taura did say before release that it could be expanded into a three-part series.
Kamiya hasn’t always been the most reliable source of info but if the regular statements that development has been progressing smoothly can be believed, it does seem pretty likely that fans will get a proper glimpse at Bayonetta 3 before the end of 2021.
Bayonetta 3 will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
