A massive leak of Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War info has revealed both its release date and the fact that it’s set in the early 1980s.
The strangest thing about this year’s reveal of the new Call Of Duty is that up until now nothing substantial has leaked out about it, which almost always usually happens. But better late than never.
The official reveal isn’t due until tomorrow, 26 August, but dataminers have found all sorts of details in the latest Warzone patch, including release dates, collector’s editions, and new packaging art.
On the face of it that seems an odd thing to discover in Warzone’s files but it’s probably because the game will be announced via Warzone and you’ll be order it directly through the free version of the battle royale.
The release date isn’t specified exactly but the expiry date on the DLC is given as 13 November 2021, and since you have a year to use the codes that means that the release date is presumably 13 November 2020 (so, yes, Friday 13th).
Other references indicate that the multiplayer won’t be unveiled until 9 September, with suggests that tomorrow’s event will only cover the single-player. The game will also apparently be featured during Gamescom’s digital online event the next day.
According to data mined by BKTOOR the pre-order details also mention getting early access to a beta, although there’s no indication of exactly when that starts – early or otherwise.
There’s also details of three different special editions of the game, plus the unhappy news that you’ll apparently have to pay to upgrade between the current and next gen versions.
The biggest revelation is the fact that the game is a direct sequel to the original Black Ops from 2010 and not a reboot like last year’s Modern Warfare.
The leak includes a short description of the game’s plot, which takes place in the early 1980s and features existing characters Woods, Mason, and Hudson.
Locations include East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey and KGB headquarters, while there’s also confirmation that there will be a Zombies mode.
This is all the leaked text, as published by COD Tracker, which all seems pretty definitive:
The iconic Black Ops series is back with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – the direct sequel to the original and fan-favourite Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Black Ops Cold War will drop fans into the depths of the Cold War’s volatile geopolitical battle of the early 1980s. Nothing is ever as it seems in a gripping single-player campaign, where players will come face-to-face with historical figures and hard truths, as they battle around the globe through iconic locales like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, Soviet KGB headquarters and more.
As elite operatives, you will follow the trail of a shadowy figure named Perseus who is on a mission to destabilise the global balance of power and change the course of history. Descend into the dark centre of this global conspiracy alongside iconic characters Woods, Mason and Hudson and a new cast of operatives attempting to stop a plot decades in the making.
Beyond the Campaign, players will bring a Cold War arsenal of weapons and equipment into the next generation of Multiplayer and Zombies experiences.
