FIFA 21 free upgrades on PS5 and Xbox Series X are out early today

It wasn’t supposed to happen until Friday, but the next gen upgrades for FIFA 21 are available to download now, free from EA.

At first EA didn’t want to allow for free next gen upgrades for their games but after being shamed into it by the actions of other publishers they’ve relented, and have even ended up releasing FIFA 21 early.

The game has been out for weeks on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 but you can now download an upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, for better performance and visuals.

All your progress from Ultimate Team and Volta will be carried over to the next gen version, but not anything else like career mode.

The download is around 50GB and to get it working all you need to do is got to your game library and you should now see the option for the new version.

The upgrade, which EA refers to as Dual Entitlement, only works within the same console family though. So you can go from PlayStation 4 to 5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S, but not Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or vice versa.

The standalone versions are still scheduled for Friday, December 4 though so you can’t buy them separately today – if that’s what you were holding out for.

The next gen versions of the game run at 60fps and up to 4K resolution, with a new lighting system and more realistic physics for everything from player’s hair to muscles and footballs that deform when used.

Perversely, these improvements will not be added to the PC version, with EA making the bizarre claim that this was a purposeful decision to keep the minimum spec down.
