When Oculus Quest casting first arrived it wasn’t the smoothest thing to set up but over time that process has steadily improved, so non-VR players can view content on a compatible TV or smartphone. Now Oculus has brought the casting function to PC, simply using a web browser.
The actual process is really easy to setup in a minute or so. All you need to do is:
- First, ensure that your PC and Oculus Quest are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (the only two compatible browsers) and then head to oculus.com/casting and log into your account.
- Press the ‘Oculus’ on the right Touch controller to pull up the universal menu.
- Select the ‘Share’ option.
- Then select ‘Cast’.
- Select the ‘Computer’ option.
- Then select ‘Done’ and you should be all set.
VRFocus tested the feature and it worked perfectly first time, streaming a session of Beat Saber. Just like the other casting options, there’s no mic support, so you’ll have to record any commentary another way plus the image is square rather than widescreen. Be aware that most videogames do support the casting mode but a few do not.
If you want to see how to cast to a TV or your phone then Oculus has a whole support page with further details.
Casting is a great way of getting friends and family involved in a VR experience, whether that’s introducing them to the tech or playing a party game. As the company announced during Facebook Connect, next year the mobile app will get a Spectator Mode so that anyone viewing streamed content will be able to control the camera.
As Facebook continues to roll out further updates for its Oculus Quest platform, VRFocus will keep you updated.
