More Possible Oculus Quest 2 Images Arrive, Appearing to Corroborate Earlier Leak

The Oculus Quest might only just be over a year old but the internet has been aflutter this week regarding its possible followup, initially fueled by one image. Today, even more, have arrived from separate sources, both rendered and actual photos, seemingly confirming that the headset is indeed real.

Once again Twitter tech leaker WalkingCat has released a couple of new renders showcasing the lens and the right side of the headset. These clearly show that there’s definitely no manual inter-pupillary distance (IPD) slider on the underside, the outer casing is now purely plastic and the piped audio built into the side of the headband.

But a rendered image is no confirmation of an actual Oculus Quest 2. Far more intriguing are the four actual pictures which have appeared over on Reddit, which definitely add credence to all the leaks this week.

As you can see the pictures and renders nicely match up, with the pics giving a much better look at the back strap. While the top is most definitely a similar adjustable Velcro system as used in a lot of VR headsets, the sides are slightly more puzzling. They almost look elasticated with some sort of adjustment where they all connect.

  • It looks like an Oculus Quest and Oculus Go have been combined, which could well mean this is more of an Oculus Quest S rather than a whole new headset. And there’s still the question of weight distribution and its effect on comfort, has this device been lightened enough to improve this factor?

There’s also a better look at the Oculus Touch controller. The face is now circular and therefore wider, plus the battery compartment seam is now central, going back to the original Oculus Touch design found on the Oculus Rift CV1.

With evidence mounting it’s looking very much like this is the new VR headset from Facebook, although don’t expect any news until September. On that note, WalkingCat also happened to mention a date, 15th September, which would tie-in to when Oculus Connect 7 (OC7) is expected. Announcement date or launch date? As further details are released, VRFocus will let you know.
