It’s been quite some time since we last heard about NEO: The World Ends with You. Announced back in November of last year, the game is the long-awaited follow-up to the cult classic DS RPG released in 2007. Nearly 14 years later, we’re going to finally see what Square Enix has been up to with this series.
On the official Twitter account for The World Ends with You -The Animation- (the upcoming anime adaptation of the first game), it was revealed by series producer Tetsuya Nomura that information regarding NEO would be shown to fans right before the airing of the first episode of the anime on April 9, 2021. Since NEO is set to follow up the events of said anime, it makes sense that Square Enix is linking to two together.
I wouldn’t necessarily expect any kind of gameplay reveal here as that wouldn’t make sense for a broadcast before the anime. We’re likely going to get more story information and possibly be introduced to some of the characters that players will be controlling. There’s still a lot of unknowns when it comes to NEO, but Square Enix loves to take its time meticulously working on games.
Whatever does happen, at least The World Ends with You is finally getting some recognition from Square Enix. I don’t believe that the first game was perfect, but it had an unmistakable atmosphere that begged for at least one sequel. It’s sad that nearly 15 years have gone by, but at least we’ll finally see a continuation before the sun explodes…maybe.
