PS5 and Xbox Series X to have ‘movie-quality’ graphics claims Epic Games

According to Epic Games, Unreal Engine 5 will allow PS5 and Xbox Series X developers to import movie-quality assets into their games.

The teaser for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 blew people away, as it offered a glimpse at the possibilities of how games could look on next gen hardware, namely the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

But this may only be the tip of the iceberg, as Epic’s chief technology officer Kim Libreri has claimed that Unreal Engine 5 will be able to deliver ‘movie-quality’ visuals.

Speaking with Official PlayStation Magazine, as reported by VGC, Libreri admits that ‘It has been a lifelong dream of [his] that real-time computer graphics, and in particular games, can be as believable and realistic as a movie.’

Apparently, with Unreal Engine 5, artists will be able to import movie-level art directly into the engine, which will then be scaled in real-time, saving time that would be spent on adjusting them for performance and all without any loss in quality.

Libreri adds that, with this tech, Unreal Engine 5 will be able to not only produce higher quality results but also improve workflow efficiency.

‘Independent developers tend to wear a lot of hats. They are designers, artists, programmers, and storytellers, and removing the time they have to spend on the technical details of game development allows them to spend more time on what makes their game fun and unique.’

As further proof of Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities, Libreri pointed towards Epic’s collaboration with LucasFilm on Disney+ show The Mandalorian, which used Unreal Engine to create real-time visual effects.

‘For many years, the movie industry has been experimenting with Unreal Engine for previsualisation and cinematic shot design,’ said Libreri.

‘And then last year Jon Favreau and LucasFilm made the leap to use Unreal to generate final pixels for in-camera visual effects on The Mandalorian.’

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are scheduled to release later this year in time for Christmas.
