PS5 game reveals: Hitman 3, Oddworld, Sackboy, NBA 2K21 and MORE next-gen gameplay

After months of waiting, Sony has finally unveiled a host of PS5 games.

The PlayStation 5 Future of Gaming event kicked off with a surprise announcement by Rockstar Games.

While not the GTA 6 reveal fans were hoping for, Rockstar instead announced that Grand Theft Auto 5 would be released on PS5.

“The new generation versions of GTAV will feature a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the latest hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever,” Rockstar explains.

“There will also be a new standalone version of GTA Online coming in the second half of 2021, which will be available for free exclusively for PlayStation 5 players during the first three months.”

After a triple bill of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sony gave fans a look at Square Enix game Project Athia.

A working title, Project Athia will “transport players to a world filled with beauty and dismay as they set upon a thrilling story-led, action-packed adventure which can be twisted, tempestuous and forbidding”.

Developed by Luminous Productions, the game is also coming out on PC.

Next up is the new game from Edith Finch publisher Annapurna Interactive. Launching in 2021, Stray sees a lost cat attempt to find its way home.

“Lost, alone, and separated from family, a stray cat must untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten cybercity and find the way home,” reads the official description.

Hoursemarque Studios also unveiled a new game called Returnal, which is described as a roguelike third-person shooter.

“Returnal combines action with roguelike gameplay into a third-person shooter where players fight to survive a hostile planet that changes with every death,” reads the official description.

“Players can switch instinctively between firing modes by using a single adaptive trigger and can get right back into the action after dying. PS5’s immersive 3D audio brings the alien world to life around the player, helping players navigate the intense positional combat.”

One of the more pleasant surprises was the announcement of a LittleBigPlanet spinoff starring Sackboy.

Developed by Sumo Digital, Sackboy A Big Adventure is a 3D platform game with a “deeply immersive and expressive control scheme”.

One of the more exciting new releases is Destruction All Stars by Lucid Games.

“Dominate the glittering global phenomenon of Destruction AllStars – the spectacular prime-time sport for dangerous drivers!” reads the official description.

“Master the art of intense vehicle-based combat through timing, tactics and skills to cause colossal amounts of damage, destruction and devastation in vibrant arenas across the globe.”

After showcasing games like Kena, Goodbye Volcano, Solar Ash, GhostWire: Tokyo, and JETT: The Far Shore, Sony had two surprise announcements for long-time gaming fans.

First up is Oddworld Soulstorm, which is a limited time PlayStation 5 console exclusive.

“Oddworld Soulstorm represents a big visual and cinematic leap aiming that breaks new ground for Oddworld,” reads the official description. “With intelligent new mechanics and twisted new devices which enable highly explosive deviousness. This is a dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits.”

Hitman 3 was also announced during the event. Launching in 2021, the Hitman sequel is said to have a darker tone than previous games in the trilogy.

“Hitman 3 is the dramatic conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy, taking players around the world on a globetrotting adventure to sprawling sandbox locations, with Agent 47 returning for the most important contracts of his career.

“Supported by his Agency handler, Diana Burnwood, Agent 47 joins forces with his long-lost friend Lucas Grey. Their ultimate mission is to eliminate the partners of Providence, but they are forced to adapt as their hunt intensifies. When the dust settles, 47 and the world he inhabits will never be the same again.”

The tail-end of the show featured highlights like Demon’s Souls Remake, Resident Evil 8, NBA 2K21, and the previously announced Godfall.

The show ended with a look at the long-rumoured Horizon Zero Dawn sequel Horizon Forbidden West.
