PS5 games were going to be even more expensive than £70 claims report

Sony was considering making PS5 games even more expensive than they already are, but they’re still cheaper in America than the UK.

The Xbox Series S, which launches today, might be the best value next gen console, at just £250, but at £450 the PlayStation 5 is much less expensive than many feared, especially given the Digital Edition – which is exactly the same but just doesn’t have a disc drive – is £100 cheaper.

But there is one obvious problem when it comes to the PlayStation 5: there’s no direct equivalent to Xbox Game Pass and some exclusive games cost up to £70.

Incredibly though, it seems Sony wanted to charge even more, with a new Bloomberg report suggesting that they had considered more than $70 (£53) in America.

The price rise to $70 is only a relatively modest increase of $10 (£7.50) from the current US standard, while the price of PlayStation exclusives has increased in the UK from £55, for games such as Ghost Of Tsushima, to £70.

That’s an increase of $20 if you convert it back to dollars, which may mean that while Sony execs thought better of a larger increase in America they went ahead with the original plan in the UK.

Demon’s Souls, Godfall, and the Ultimate Edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales are all £70; even Destruction AllStars was supposed to be before it got delayed until next year and made free on PS Plus.

Bloomberg’s sources are unnamed Sony executives, who apparently requested anonymity as they knew the plans were unpopular.

The report also suggests that a general price increase has been planned by third party publishers for some time now, with the start of the new generation being seen as the perfect opportunity.

What’s odd though is that no third party game is as much as £70 on the PlayStation 5, with only a few high profile games, such as Call Of Duty and NBA 2K, going as high as £65.

It’s peculiar to see Sony being the only one to charge so much but it may be because games like Call Of Duty, and the upcoming PlayStation 5 version of FIFA 21, are cross-gen and third party publishers will switch to £70 once they can claim that a game is next gen only.

Either way, gaming has suddenly become a measurably more expensive hobby if you’re a PlayStation fan and if third parties do switch to £70 in the future that will probably be the same for Xbox Series X/S games too.
