Sony has warned fans that you won’t be able to walk into a store and buy a PS5 on launch day, as COVID forces everything online.
If you had any lingering hopes that you’d be able to pick up a PlayStation 5 on launch day they’ve just been dashed, as Sony has announced that everything will have to go through online stores.
Some fans had been imagining that supermarkets, or other stores not so affected by the lockdown, might be selling the consoles on launch day but that’s now not going to happen.
This is nothing specifically to do with the lockdown in England but a worldwide policy, that’s also likely influenced by the fact that there aren’t enough consoles to go around anyway.
‘In the interest of keeping our gamers, retailers, and staff safe amidst COVID-19, today we are confirming that all day-of launch sales will be conducted through the online stores of our retail partners’, reads a short note on the official PlayStation blog.
‘Please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.’
Of course the problem with that is that no store has any consoles in stock to order, so that too will have to wait until after launch.
Many stores, including GAME and Argos, will allow you to collect your new console (including the Xbox Series X/S) from their store if you’ve already pre-ordered, but if you haven’t then you’re out of luck.
The question now is when more stock will become available but that’s something neither Sony nor Microsoft has really addressed yet.
There should be more available shortly after launch but given how much trouble the coronavirus is still causing it’s just going to be a case of wait and see.
The PlayStation 5 launches on November 19 in the UK but November 12 outside of Europe.
