PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Exciting Microsoft plans spell trouble for next-gen PlayStation

Microsoft continues to make all the right noises in the battle between the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

With both consoles launching in late 2020, fans are waiting for Microsoft and Sony to officially lift the lid on next-gen hardware and games.

Hardware reveal events traditionally take place during the week of the E3 gaming expo in June. However, recent reports have suggested that both next-gen consoles could be unveiled in May.

While the reveal and release dates remain a mystery, one thing that is for sure is that the next-gen console war is going to be much closer than the battle between PS4 and Xbox One.

Indeed, according to Microsoft executive Phil Spencer’s latest comments, there has never been a more exciting time to be an Xbox fan.

“Reviewed plans yesterday for continued sharing through launch,” Spencer tweets. “Team is doing great work and adapting. I’ve never been more excited about Xbox plans.

“We’ve heard you, you want transparency/authenticity. We plan to keep showing that way, next step is not too much of a wait (games)”

The comments suggest that Microsoft won’t make the same mistakes with Xbox Series X as it did with Xbox One.

The unveiling of the Xbox One didn’t exactly go to plan, as Microsoft focused on all the wrong things.

Instead of showcasing Xbox One games, Microsoft spent more time talking up the console’s merits as an entertainment device.

Likewise, Microsoft’s decision to bundle the console with a Kinect camera meant it was more expensive than the PS4, and then there was the whole DRM (digital rights management) issue.

The company would backtrack on plans for regular online authentication to limit the sharing of games, but by then it was too late for the Xbox One.

After the confusion surrounding the release of the Xbox One, fans can expect a much smoother launch and clearer message when Microsoft fully unveils the Xbox Series X next month.

Microsoft recently said that the Xbox Series X console would feature 12 Teraflops of power, and would contain a custom RDNA 2 and Zen 2 Processor.

The new Xbox is also said to support Variable Rate Shading, feature Hardware Accelerated DirectX Raytracing and a custom built SSD.

Elsewhere, the console is said to have Dynamic Latency Input, Auto Low Latency Mode, a HDMI 2.1 port, Variable Refresh Rate, and 120 FPS Support.

But it’s the backwards compatibility talk that has really caught the eye.

“Xbox Series X brings the next generation of COMPATIBILITY,” Microsoft explains. “Play thousands of games across four generations that look and feel better than ever.”

Microsoft also revealed something called Smart Delivery, which is said to guarantee you get the best version of the game for your Xbox. This includes upcoming blockbusters like Cyberpunk 2077.
