Red Dead Redemption 2 could follow GTA 5 to next gen hints Take-Two

GTA 5 may not be the only older game to appear on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as Take-Two’s boss says ‘I’m sure there will be more in the future’.

When Grand Theft Auto 5 is released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later next year it will be the only video game in history to be remastered and released largely unchanged for three generations in a row.

But while no other game, except perhaps Minecraft, can come close to that level of success Rockstar parent company Take-Two has said that it’s unlikely to be the only older game to return next generation.

Asked about the likelihood of other older titles coming to the next gen consoles, during an investor Q&A session, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said, ‘We always leave those announcements to our labels, but I’m sure there will be more in the future’.

That’s all he said, with no indication of which games or even that they were definitely Rockstar titles, but the most obvious thing would be a next gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Not only has it been hugely successful but, like GTA 5, it has an online mode that is still hugely profitable and which Rockstar will be keen to ensure is not sidelined by the next generation.

Beyond that the obvious front runners include Red Dead Redemption 1 (or perhaps even Red Dead Revolver), Bully, and Max Payne 3.

Or perhaps Rockstar might finally be considering remakes of even older games, since the PlayStation 2 trio of GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas have never seen a proper remake and are now very difficult to enjoy in their original form.

Take-Two as a whole is keener on remakes than Rockstar, with the upcoming Mafia: Definitive Edition already scheduled for this year, following an extensive remaster of Mafia 2.

Bioshock has also received its own remaster collection but a full remake of the first game does seem a good way to drum up interest in a new sequel.

Borderlands might seem another obvious choice, but developer Gearbox owns the rights to that franchise and the early titles have only just been remastered.

Zelnick made his remarks following Take-Two’s latest financial results, where it was revealed that Grand Theft Auto 5 has shipped a staggering 135 million copies, with Red Dead Redemption 2 on 32 million, NBA 2K20 on 14 million, Borderlands 3 on 10.5 million, and The Outer Worlds on 2.8 million.
