State of Play this Thursday will focus on PSVR and PS4

It turns out Sony is holding a new State of Play this week, but weirdly it won’t have much to do with PS5.

There have been plenty of rumours recently that Sony has a State of Play presentation planned for August, which will unveil new details about the PlayStation 5, like it’s release date and price.

Well, it turns out we are getting one very soon, this Thursday in fact, but its primary focus will be on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. Because obviously that’s what everybody wants to know about right now.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog the event will cover third party PlayStation 4 games, though there will be some updates regarding third party and indie PlayStation 5 games that were shown during June’s showcase.

It sounds like there will be a lot to show as well, as it is reportedly over 40 minutes long. It doesn’t say exactly what we’ll be seeing, though the Japanese PlayStation Blog explicitly mentions Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, which will be launching this autumn.

However, as if to temper expectations, Sony has also made it clear that there will be no announcements from its first party studios or any details regarding dates or pre-orders.

This basically means that there will most definitely be no PlayStation 5 price or release date reveal, but it doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of a separate State of Play about the PlayStation 5 taking place this month.

As for Microsoft, Xbox head Phil Spencer, during an interview with YouTuber iJustine, did say that the next Xbox event should be taking place in August too.

It has been previously reported that the rumoured Xbox Series S console will be officially announced this month, though Xbox fans are probably more eager for a release date and pricing announcement of the Xbox Series X.

With both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X scheduled to launch this year, Sony and Microsoft are gradually running out of time to let people know when they can actually buy them and how much they’ll need to save up for them.

The State of Play will take place on Thursday 6 August at 9pm BST/1pm PT/4pm ET.
