The Last Of Us Part 3 or new IP is Naughty Dog’s next game

It seems Naughty Dog may not be finished with The Last Of Us franchise, even if they seem to have no plans for a new Uncharted.

The question of whether there’ll be a third The Last Of Us game has been addressed a lot more quickly than many would’ve expected, as developer Naughty Dog hint it could be their next game.

Speaking to GQ, director Neil Druckmann said that The Last Of Us Part 3 or a new IP was most likely to be Naughty Dog’s next project.

‘As you start wrapping things up, creatively there are fewer and fewer responsibilities and my mind can’t help but think about the next thing,’ he said. ‘So yeah, the next thing could be a Part 3, the next thing could be some new IP.’

Considering how long it takes to make a Naughty Dog game it’s likely even an announcement is years away, but it’s interesting that Druckmann seems to rule out a new Uncharted.

Uncharted 4 ended pretty definitively and while it’s not impossible to imagine Sony giving the job of a new game to a different developer, it’s not surprising to find that Naughty Dog feel they’re finished with the series.

In the same interview, Druckmann also discusses how he ignored calls to set The Last Of Us Part 2 in a different country or with different characters, and how he considered that a ‘coward’s way out’.

‘To me, at that point, you might as well just do a new IP,’ he says. ‘Versus saying: no, we’re gonna double down and we’re gonna expose what this ending means. To take some of the things that people hold sacred and just… dismantle it.’

He also confirms that Chernobyl director Johan Renck will be directing the pilot episode of the HBO adaptation of The Last Of Us, which will be co-written by Druckmann and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

It’s possible that may segue into a third game, although it’s not currently clear how closely it will stick to the events of the existing games.
