It’s been nearly a decade since the last Evangelion movie, but it looks like Studio Khara is finally set to release Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time. According to the studio’s Twitter account, editing for the film finished on December 10 at 8:10 AM JST.
The first three films of the Rebuild of Evangelion trilogy, titled Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, came out in 2007, 2009, and 2012, respectively. Then in 2015, director and Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno put the series on hold indefinitely to go work on Shin Godzilla. Following that movie’s release, he went back to work on completing the Rebuild of Evangelion series with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time.
Originally set to debut last June, coronavirus concerns led to a seven-month delay, with a new theatrical release date set for January 23, 2021. Hikaru Utada is set to return for the theme song “One Last Kiss,” and the first three films will be screened across Japan throughout December.
We got our first trailer back in October, and it looks like we’re heading into uncharted territory with the fourth film. The first three Evangelion Rebuild movies largely covered content that was already in the ’80s animated series, with some new stuff added here and there. Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo covered mostly to the end of the series, which means 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time should be almost entirely new to fans.
There’s no word on whether the January 23 release will include streaming services, digital sales, or just a theatrical release in Japan, although we do know that dubbing has been completed along with the film’s final edits. We’ll have to find out as we get closer to the January release date.
